The Dewdney Grind is a great work out with an amazing pay off! You are rewarded with a cool fully stocked cabin and a great view of the valley. The hike itself is actually not too long but very steep. It can be a little confusing to find and stay on the trail, as it is not well marked in some areas. Here are some instructions for finding your way:
To find the start of the trail put “Dewdney Grind” in Google maps. The trail starts on Norrish Creek forest service road. You only drive about one or two minutes up this gravel road (safe for cars). Shortly after passing the Norrish Creek forest service road sign, you will go around a big corner. Park on the right side after the big corner and the trail will begin on the left hand side.
Trail starts here on the left side
Part of the trail, a short distance up from the start.
No where to go but UP!
The trail starts steep and narrow off the gravel road. You will see markers here and there that are orange. After you climb up for a while you will come out on the forest service road. Cross the gravel road and continue straight back onto the trail (blue paint marker on the tree).
Cross the road and directly back into the forest here.
Shortly after you will come out onto the forest service road again. This time you need to walk straight up the forest road a short distance until you see the trail on the left hand side (you will see grey metal markers on the trees and as you climb up you will see one marked as CABIN). Continue on until you have reached the cabin and the gorgeous view point!
Walk straight up this gravel road.
The trail will open up on the left side of the gravel road.
You are in the right spot if you see these markers!
We were excited to see this marker!
I thought the cabin was so neat as it’s fully stocked and maintained well by the community! There is also a fire pit outside the cabin where you could enjoy the view and warmth from a fire. The cabin was dedicated to a helicopter pilot named Ben von Hardenberg who lost his life after a crash while fighting a forest fire; you can read about this while you are in the cabin. Pretty cool that the community dedicated this to him.
I highly recommend this hike but definitely be prepared with the right footwear and be prepared for a good workout with some soreness after. You may want to consider hiking poles as it definitely burned my knees coming down this trail!
Enjoying a well deserved lunch break at the view point.
Directly outside of the cabin, attempting to build a fire.
